UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
